My dad, Martin Ambrose, was a Broadway actor, folk musician, and history buff. He was especially interested in the American Civil War. History also played a role in his acting and music career. He performed in the Civil War musical, Wilderness Road and recorded abolitionist songs on his solo folk album, Father Grumble.
One of the Civil War songs he recorded is “Jeff Davis’ Dream,” also known as “Jeff Davis Awoke.” It’s an unflattering portrayal of Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederate States of America. This is a brief version of the song. The original has six verses, and this just includes the first verse, and a second verse with a similar theme that drives the point home.
